Astro TV MV Grant with Dizkopolis

Astro Hitz Music Video Grant has continuously showing us some amazing new local acts through the MV Grant programs and this 10th winner is no exception as well. Dizkopolis is officially the first dance act to be featured as a MV Grant winner. We spoke to the duo Ahmad Taufiq and Adi Ridhwan about their win.

Tell us how you get started in music.
We started off as a pair of DJs and we used to play around clubs in KL, but then we came across this Daft Punk’s film Interstella 5555. We then decided to get into music production ever since. As we don’t really have any musical background, the passion pretty much came out of nowhere.

Who influences you musically?
Our main influences are definitely Daft Punk and Justice.

Why the name Dizkopolis?
The name “Dizkopolis” was inspired from Lifelike & Kris Menace’s nu disco jam entitled “Discopolis”.

How would you describe your music style?
French Touch / Nu Disco / Synthpop / Indie Dance.

How do you think your style would fit into the local music scene?
Well basically we’re trying to inject something fresh to the local music scene, despite the overwhelming responses from both local and international listeners recently. We’re pretty sure it’s gonna be all good if everything turns out well, though it might take some time for the locals to actually adapt to this kind of music.

How does it feel to win MV Grant?
We’re honored and surprised as well as we’re the first dance act to win the MV Grant. We’d also like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who had participated in voting for Dizkopolis.

Tell us the story behind your winning song.
The track “Class Of ’91″ was originally done back in early 2011. At first, we didn’t feel like were ready to release the track because we felt like there’s some element missing out, so we come up with the 8-bit/chiptune elements idea instead. The track was a huge success and it was officially released on our Soundcloud 8 months ago. In January 2012, we did a rework of the track for our winning entry on Astro Hitz The MV Grant. The reworked version of the track relies less on the chiptune elements of the original and leans more toward a smooth, more French, Disco sound with the elements of Dreamwave. “Class Of ’91″ is an electric, synthy journey, ready to take people into orbit.

What can we expect from Dizkopolis for the rest of this year?
2012 is gonna be huge! We’re working on our first debut EP Renaissance, forthcoming on Pixelated Waves hopefully by this summer! It’s gonna be epic.
